Doo-Dah, Doo-Dah

My Gram was a part of the Camptown community for many years before coming to live with my family, so going to the Camptown Races was just something we always did. I remember as a kid (and young adult) piling into the car and going to my gram's to set up our lawn chairs at her house on 409 to see the runners. We would go to the start line to watch them take off, wander around the various vendors and then get a chicken dinner with some dessert before heading back to take our place in our lawn chairs. We would wait and make guesses on how long before the 1st runner would come through and when would the first female pass by. As the runners filed by we would cheer and offer encouragement. This year marked the 50th running of the Camptown races and I was excited to be able to photograph this event. I loaded up my photo gear and my mountain bike so I could get some shots from the trails. I arrived in Camptown, and the tent was a bustle of activity as runners were registering and wa...

The Cars in Bart's Backyard

Image
It's funny how you can be at a place so many times and yet never really see what's there... One reason I love photography is that it allows you to really look and see!  I spent a lot of time at my friend's father's house as a teen and still. He is a car guy. He has a lot of (as he calls it) money in the bank. Some see that "money in the bank" as junk, but I see it as something interesting for my lens to look at. While some friends and I were gathered at Bart's house catching up and visiting, the camera twins united and went out to photograph! I love how old rusted, abandoned vehicles look. There's always so much character and memories wrapped up in those rides. So I will leave you with some photos of the cars in Bart's backyard... I also stepped a bit out of my box with these photos. I generally stick to what you see is what you get, and do very little in editing with filters and such. I have been experimenting more and more with PicMonkey and w...

Perseid Persuit

Image
First off, I apologize for the length in between blogs. I would like to say it's been a busy summer, but at times I just get a bit lackadaisical. So thanks for your patience :) I have been an admirer of astronomy for quite some time. I even spent some time in Astronomy Club in school. I find star-gazing a beautiful, relaxing and interesting activity. It seems extremely surprising that photography love and star gazing love have not collided sooner... yet it hadn't. When the Perseid Meteor Shower comes around, I mark it on my calendar. I have been viewing these meteor showers for at least 15 years, but have never tried photographing them. This year I decided it was high time to try. I read a few tips. I gathered my gear. I went outside and set up my tripod. I did a few test shots to see what was in my frame and to test exposures. The moon was beautiful and bright that night. Then the clouds rolled in. I waited an hour or so and hoped they would cooperate, but around midnigh...

Adventures with Amey part II - Salt Springs

Image
Excitement filled my shutter when cousin and fellow photog, Amey, invited me for another day to play with our cameras! Salt Springs was our destination. There was beauty all around! Flora and fauna, wildlife and beautiful falls were frozen in every frame. We arrived, packed our gear and set out on some trails. After hiking a relatively flat and easy path, we ventured on a couple more difficult trails to the falls. Spending most of the time photographing waterfalls, we were in our glory... until a gentle rain began to fall. Not having any rain gear we packed up and called it a day. With our camera cards full we decided it was time to fill our bellies. Stopping at OIP we grabbed some great stromboli and then picked up some chocolates . It was hard to decide which of the delicious looking treats to box up! Now I leave you with some of the shots of the day from my Pentax . Amey spotted the tracks of a fawn! So tiny they were!!! Stay conn...

Dandelion Delight

Image
Bright, yellow dandelions flowing in a field... always a sign of summer. When they turn whispy and you can wish upon the seeds as they blow away, any dream seems possible. Did you know that you could eat dandelions? When my husband first offered the suggestion, I'm sure I made a classic "EWWWW" face! After some persuasion, I did try them. My verdict; I will keep my dandelions in my composition, not on my dinner table. They have a bitter taste, but offer some fiber and other "goodies."
